Marche Region in cooperation with CNR-IRBIM of Ancona organized the 2nd innovation brokering event for the small-scale fisheries in Ancona on 29 June 2022.

The event was arranged under the ARIEL PLUS project (INTERREG ADRION) and represents the follow-up of the first meeting held in 2018 to test the interactive engagement of the small-scale fisheries in the innovation discovery process. Facilitated by the project partners acting as public innovation brokers, the current event was aimed at identifying sectoral needs as well as at identifying and discussing how to address them with feasible and bankable solutions. The participants were SSF fishers and SSF associations, regional authority, sectoral agency , university, research centers. After a plenary presentation on the contribution of previous and ongoing EU 2014/2020 projects to the small-scale fisheries challenges in terms of actions realized and results achieved at regional and transnational level, participants discussed together topics of common interest such as impact of top predators on catches and gears, selectivity, awareness and access to funding opportunities and innovation, climate change effects on sea resources, aggregation into associations, spatial planning for sea resources co-management, modernization and energy efficiency. Some actions that can be co-financed by the EMFAF were listed by way of example.

The following elements emerged from the innovation brokering:
– a growing concern of the health status of the SSF target species
– need of a better understanding on financial opportunities to innovate their business
– interest in exchange knowledge, experiences and best practices with SSF fishers form the Adriatic Area
– the need of testing new pilot actions in cooperation with public administration, Universities and research centers and other SSF fishers to protect the environment while preserving the SSF income
– usefulness of services – such as the event at hand – to support innovation speed-up and transfer as well as to support in scouting and accessing to regional funds
– further trials for evaluating the feasibility of electric and/or hybrid engine on SSF vessels
– the need of improving the institutional communication on available funds and call for grants
– spatial planning for conservation areas establishment
– existing artificial reefs co-management and valorization

The event findings are elaborated in a list of ideas for future projects and initiative.
